Since leaving school in 1991 I have worked within the engineering industry. Starting as a multiskilled maintenance apprentice and served my time to Higher National Certificate (Level 5) standard. I then progressed to complete a bachelor’s degree in manufacturing operations management and started in education working at Rolls-Royce in 2003. I have worked in education since working as an assessor, internal verifier and in management as an operation manager. What am I looking for in a winning entry?

When reviewing the apprenticeship categories, I'll be looking for nominations that reflect a strong level of engagement and commitment to the apprenticeship journey. I am interested in those who show an appreciation of the opportunities apprenticeships provide and an understanding of how these experiences support both personal development and organisational success. Nominees who are able to demonstrate how they have grown through their apprenticeship, applied learning in the workplace, and contributed positively to their employer particularly stand out. I am also keen to hear of the wider benefits of apprenticeships, including skills development, career progression, and long‑term impact.

Liz has spent the last eight years working with small and medium sized manufacturers helping them improve their competitiveness. Originally a manufacturing engineering, she specialised in process improvement and innovation, applying Lean Six Sigma approaches. After spending time working in manufacturing for a multinational company, she moved companies and took up a role training and supporting across a range of industries, helping to develop talent and skills related to process improvement. She has mentored and trained dozens of Lean Six Sigma Green and Black Belts, as well as running a European Master Black Belt programme. Key to any company improvement or innovation is people, and latterly she has focused on developing others in terms of their leadership skills. Gaining a MSc in Psychology with a Business Specialism, she has driven the development of a Future Sustainable Manufacturing Leaders course, in conjunction with industrial partners, which has received very positive feedback.

What am I looking for in a winning entry?

My primary interest is in how the company has recognised and articulated the need to develop talent, whether internally to the business, or more longer term across manufacturing through community and school engagement. I am keen to learn about how they have created an inclusive approach throughout their chosen activities from engaging with stakeholders through to selecting individuals to support. Another key aspect is how awareness/training/development is tailored to the needs of the individuals and their specific circumstance rather than maintaining a generic approach.

Louis is currently the Global Product Manager for the Machine Knife division at leading aftermarket machine parts company, PartsPak. He began his career in manufacturing eight years ago in Sheffield and completed a management degree apprenticeship at Sheffield Hallam University. In 2023, he was named Business Final Year Apprentice of the Year at his previous company—an accolade that provided a strong platform for his progression into the global leadership role he holds today. Now in his second year as a Make UK Awards judge, Louis looks forward to the event each year. Lucy has worked in Learning and Development roles for over 10 years with a focus on helping individuals and teams develop their skills and capabilities through coaching, mentoring, individual and group training with a passion for social and experiential learning. I look for clear, measurable impact rather than intent alone. Strong entries demonstrate tangible improvements in performance, whether through productivity, quality, cost, delivery or customer outcomes, supported by credible data. Equally important is how those results were achieved. Nick Tyson was appointed to the position of Assistant Principal & Director of Learning at Coleg Cambria in June 2016. Having worked at the college since 1999 initially as a lecturer, Nick has played a leading role in the development of Engineering and Construction provision and the growth/support in ‘Learners’ and ‘Apprentices’ within the sector. Nick has been a key driver in supporting links with local schools whereby over 300, 14 -16 year olds attend college completing qualifications to compliment there school programmes. A keen advocate of apprenticeships Nick leads a team that manages over 500 apprenticeships within the work based provision at Coleg Cambria working closely in partnership with companies such as Airbus, UPM Shotton Paper, Welsh Water Knauf and Kingspan Nick is currently the Chair of the ‘Colegau Cymru Engineering network’ and assists the SSC SEMTA in defining Engineering activity and provision in Wales.

Palie Smart is a Professor in Operations Management and currency holds the role of Associate Pro Vice-Chancellor for Global Civic Engagement at the University of Bristol. This role involves working closely with the City of Bristol partners as well as national and international collaborators. Previously Palie was the Head of the School of Management at Bristol. Her research interests are focussed on new models of innovation for sustainable business, and she has been published in world leading and internationally excellent academic journals.

Automate UK former Executive Chair with over 25 years experience in the manufacturing sector including 17 years as Managing Director of the RARUK Group of Companies, Peter Williamson brings a wealth of knowledge to the association in his roles as Policy Director as it helps to drive the UK forward with the adoption of automation within manufacturing. Peter is particularly passionate about the development of skills within manufacturing, being the driving force behind Automate UK's apprenticeship clusters as well as working with Cranfield University Trailblazer to develop their Robotics Level 6 Apprenticeship.

As a judge in the apprenticeship categories, I believe a winning entry should demonstrate how an individual has used personal motivation to find and excel in an apprenticeship position, achieving personal growth and adding value to the business that they work for.

Peter Ball is Professor of Operations Management at the School for Business and Society in the University of York, UK. He teaches at York, nationally and internationally on business improvement and sustainability. His research on sustainable practices for performance improvement is built on extensive collaboration with industry. He has been a judge for Make UK since 2010.

What are you looking for in a winning entry?

A compelling story of how your company "punched above its weight" to achieve something that can be held up as an exemplar of the standard other companies need to rise too.

Raghu Das is a seasoned international Managing Director with over 35 years’ experience in manufacturing based industries leading businesses across multiple cultures in EMEA and APAC. His career is defined by high-level P&L responsibility, notably directing EMEA business for The Toro Company, a $4.5 billion NYSE listed multinational. He has an MSc in Advanced Manufacturing Technology from the University of Manchester. His expertise spans multi-site manufacturing, business turnaround, acquisitions and global supply chain integration. Raghu led the ""Lean Transformation"" that established Toro UK Limited (formerly Hayter Limited) as a ""Best Practice Showcase"" host company. As non-exec director, Raghu served on the boards of Hertfordshire Learning and Skills Council, Investment Advisory Board - Hertfordshire LEP, Make UK National Membership Board, EEF South Trustees Limited and served as Vice-Chair of the East of England Regional Board. He was President of EEF South and has been a judge on NMA for several years.

What am I looking for in a winning entry?

I will be looking for data based evidence backing compelling narratives. I will be focusing on the following areas as I walk through the entries. Strategic Growth - Evidence of consistent strategies which have driven growth - market penetration strategy, diversification strategy, export strategy, distribution strategy etc. Innovation - How effectively has the organisation adopted and adapted technology to suit their particular business to boost productivity, customer service etc. to deliver better value for customers Resilience - The last decade has been challenging for many organisations, especially in managing complex supply chains. I am proud to be judging the Apprentice category at the Make UK Manufacturing Awards, bringing both professional insight and lived experience of the apprenticeship journey. I left school without GCSEs and began my career by attending a training provider to secure my English and maths qualifications. This experience gave me the confidence and determination to progress, and I went on to complete a Business Administration apprenticeship at Chesterfield College. From there, I continued to develop my career through apprenticeships, working my way through the levels and most recently completing the Level 5 Apprenticeship in Operations and Departmental Management with The Sheffield College. I am now a strong advocate for apprenticeships and the opportunities they provide. In my current role supporting student employability, I am passionate about championing pathways that build skills, confidence and long‑term career progression, regardless of a person’s starting point.

Stuart Coles is a Professor in Sustainable Materials and Manufacturing and the Associate Dean of Research at WMG, University of Warwick. His research focuses on leveraging data-driven decision making to address industrial decarbonisation challenges, primarily through life cycle assessment (LCA) and techno-economic analysis (TEA), integrated with multi-criteria decision aiding (MCDA). His current projects include exploring the LCA of hydrothermal upgrading for chemical recycling of polymers and the chemometric identification and sorting of mixed waste polymers. He also leads research on whole life carbon accounting and the application of circular economy principles. Previously, he has worked on the environmental footprint of lithium-ion batteries and hydrogen generation from wastewater.

I am looking for clearly defined projects that go above and beyond mandatory reporting requirements and well-established targets. I would like to see projects that are able to successfully tackle multiple areas of sustainability (environmental, economic and social) whilst providing a tangible benefits for the company.

As Sector Engagement Lead at Enginuity, Tabby works to break down barriers to engineering and manufacturing by building strong partnerships, creating clearer pathways into the industry, and championing the value of different backgrounds and experiences. Her work is centred on making engineering more accessible, inclusive and future-ready, including promoting apprenticeships as a real and exciting route into the sector. Tabby has delivered webinars, talks and podcasts to both employers and young people, helping to raise awareness of the wide range of opportunities available. Prof. Veronica Martinez (FHEA) is the Professor of Digital Operations and Services at Sussex Business School and Director of Studies at Sidney Sussex College at the University of Cambridge. She was the Associate Professor of Services and Sustainability in the Institute for Manufacturing. Prior Cambridge University, she worked at Cranfield School of Management and Strathclyde Universities. Veronica is a visiting professor at the Hong Kong Polytechnique University. Her research expertise focuses on the fields of Digital Platforms such as Blockchain and Digital Twins, Business Model Innovation, Strategic Value Creation and Performance and their applications to Manufacturing, Services and Space. Veronica has led and participated in large European and UK research projects in products and services. She works in multidisciplinary teams investigating and supporting organizations in their digital transformations and servitization strategies. She is a permanent and occasional reviewer of high impact journals.
