Since leaving school in 1991 I have worked within the engineering industry. Starting as a multiskilled maintenance apprentice and served my time to Higher National Certificate (Level 5) standard. I then progressed to complete a bachelor’s degree in manufacturing operations management and started in education working at Rolls-Royce in 2003. I have worked in education since working as an assessor, internal verifier and in management as an operation manager. I have worked with Make UK since 2009, putting apprentices forward for the NEYH regional awards and in the first 7 years had a winner in the various categories every year and compete in the Nationals. I have also judged for the last 4 years and chaired last year’s regional awards for the Northwest.

He progressed through various production roles and spent 15 years as a Section Manager in Learning and Development at a major automotive OEM. In 2022, he played a key role in supporting the setup and launch of a GIGA factory in Blyth as a Learning Specialist and was appointed Professor of Practice for Electrification Skills at Newcastle University. I later moved into the role of Manufacturing & Maintenance Planning Engineer during which I also completed a degree in Plant Engineering. Post a short stay at Airbus UK as a Projects engineer (A380 build programme) my next role led me into Further education college as a Technical Training Instructor. In partnership with Higher education I developed and implemented numerous qualifications including a Work-based Foundation degree programme. Academic progression saw me complete my Post Graduate Certificate in Education (Teaching Qualification) and a degree in Post Compulsory Education and Training. Now as Training manager for a Manufacturing and maintenance organisation - I oversee early careers programmes, STEM activity, and a portfolio of learning programmes aligned to EH&S and regulatory requirements. I am looking for an Apprentice who is engaged / switched on and enjoys personal development. Liz has spent the last eight years working with small and medium sized manufacturers helping them improve their competitiveness. Originally a manufacturing engineering, she specialised in process improvement and innovation, applying Lean Six Sigma approaches. After spending time working in manufacturing for a multinational company, she moved companies and took up a role training and supporting across a range of industries, helping to develop talent and skills related to process improvement. She has mentored and trained dozens of Lean Six Sigma Green and Black Belts, as well as running a European Master Black Belt programme. Key to any company improvement or innovation is people, and latterly she has focused on developing others in terms of their leadership skills. Nick has been a key driver in supporting links with local schools whereby over 300, 14 -16 year olds attend college completing qualifications to compliment there school programmes. He was the Head of Department in the Operations and Information Management Department from 2015 to 2018. He received his PhD on Simulation of e-business processes from Strathclyde University, where he also gained an MSc in Manufacturing Management. His first degree is in Chemical Engineering. Pavel's major research interests revolve around the fields of simulation, supply chain management, emergency management and humanitarian logistics. He has an MSc in Advanced Manufacturing Technology from the University of Manchester. I am proud to be judging the Apprentice category at the Make UK Manufacturing Awards, bringing both professional insight and lived experience of the apprenticeship journey. I left school without GCSEs and began my career by attending a training provider to secure my English and maths qualifications. This experience gave me the confidence and determination to progress, and I went on to complete a Business Administration apprenticeship at Chesterfield College. From there, I continued to develop my career through apprenticeships, working my way through the levels and most recently completing the Level 5 Apprenticeship in Operations and Departmental Management with The Sheffield College. I am now a strong advocate for apprenticeships and the opportunities they provide. In my current role supporting student employability, I am passionate about championing pathways that build skills, confidence and long‑term career progression, regardless of a person’s starting point.

When judging the Apprentice category, I am looking for someone who demonstrates real determination, commitment and resilience throughout their apprenticeship journey. I am particularly interested in individuals who have overcome challenges or barriers and used these experiences as motivation to succeed. A strong work ethic, a willingness to learn and the ability to consistently strive to be the best they can be are key qualities for me. I also value apprentices who go beyond what is expected of them—whether that is showing innovation, bringing fresh ideas into the workplace, improving processes, or being ahead of the game in their approach to learning and development. Stuart Coles is a Professor in Sustainable Materials and Manufacturing and the Associate Dean of Research at WMG, University of Warwick. His research focuses on leveraging data-driven decision making to address industrial decarbonisation challenges, primarily through life cycle assessment (LCA) and techno-economic analysis (TEA), integrated with multi-criteria decision aiding (MCDA). His current projects include exploring the LCA of hydrothermal upgrading for chemical recycling of polymers and the chemometric identification and sorting of mixed waste polymers. He also leads research on whole life carbon accounting and the application of circular economy principles. Previously, he has worked on the environmental footprint of lithium-ion batteries and hydrogen generation from wastewater.

She was the Associate Professor of Services and Sustainability in the Institute for Manufacturing. Prior Cambridge University, she worked at Cranfield School of Management and Strathclyde Universities. Veronica is a visiting professor at the Hong Kong Polytechnique University. Her research expertise focuses on the fields of Digital Platforms such as Blockchain and Digital Twins, Business Model Innovation, Strategic Value Creation and Performance and their applications to Manufacturing, Services and Space.
