Alexia is a Through Life Technical Lead at Rolls-Royce, with experience across the Defence Portfolio. Beginning as an Aerospace Engineering Degree Apprentice, she advanced to a Master’s Degree Apprenticeship in Through-Life System Sustainment, focusing on improving long-life asset maintenance. Her work includes reducing military engine repair times and leveraging data analytics to enhance Navy asset availability. Beyond her technical role, Alexia is a Non-Executive Director for EAL and a Trustee for Enginuity, supporting engineering education and skills. Passionate about STEM and apprenticeships, she has dedicated over 200 hours to outreach in the past year. She chairs the IfATE Apprentice Panel and contributes to UCAS, the IET, and IMechE. Recognised with multiple awards, one of which being the MAKE UK Engineering Apprentice: Rising Star 2023, Alexia rose from Apprentice to Technical Lead in under six years, embodying trust, integrity, and safety. I look for entries that showcase exceptional impact and initiative. I’m particularly interested in individuals who have delivered significant cost or time savings through the projects they’ve led or contributed to. I also value those who demonstrate a strong commitment to inspiring the next generation, whether through promoting STEM careers or supporting apprenticeships. Going above and beyond what is expected in their role is key, as is evidence of mentoring or supporting fellow apprentices. Finally, I look for those who are actively shaping the future of manufacturing - either within their own organisation or more broadly across the sector.

What am I looking for in an entry?

This year, I’ll be looking for entries that go beyond decarbonisation and demonstrate a deeper commitment to embedding sustainability across the whole business. I’m especially keen to see initiatives that are not only reducing negative impacts but creating positive and regenerative outcomes for people, nature, and local communities. It’s encouraging to see how many businesses are stepping up, and I’d love to see more entries that show how sustainability is being embedded into company culture, decision-making, supply chains, and innovation strategies. I'm particularly interested in how organisations are engaging their teams in the process, bringing people along with them to drive change from the inside out.

Since leaving school in 1991 I have worked within the engineering industry. Starting as a multiskilled maintenance apprentice and served my time to Higher National Certificate (Level 5) standard. I then progressed to complete a bachelor’s degree in manufacturing operations management and started in education working at Rolls-Royce in 2003. I have worked in education since working as an assessor, internal verifier and in management as an operation manager. I have worked with Make Uk since 2009, putting apprentices forward for the NEYH regional awards and in the first 7 years had a winner in the various categories every year and compete in the Nationals. I have also judged for the last 4 years and chaired last year’s regional awards for the Northwest.

What am I looking for in an entry?

What I look for in an outstanding apprentice is someone who has a passion for engineering and manufacturing. Looking to make a difference and help support future apprentices. The applicant would be driven and shows dedication to their field. Wanting to be the best at all they do.

Graeme is responsible for supporting the development of the Technology and Innovation (T&I) culture within CPI and ensuring the integration of CPI’s full innovation capability as part of the High Value Manufacturing Catapult offer. He originally joined CPI as the Director of the National Formulation Centre in 2015, where he led the establishment and management of CPI’s Formulation capability which enables the UK’s ecosystem of academics, SME's and large companies to de-risk the development and scale-up to manufacture of their complex, high-value, formulated products (with applications spanning foods to pharmaceuticals, paints to detergents, inks to composite materials). Graeme’s passion for technical capability development through people saw him lead various community of practice groups to accelerate knowledge transfer and spark idea re-application to add business value. He has a Ph.D. in Preparation, Characterisation and Catalytic Properties of Gallium Loaded Zeolites from the University of Edinburgh.

What am I looking for in an entry?

For me Innovation isn’t always the most advanced science, but the most useful and wide-reaching benefit space, maximising the positive impact it makes on people, plant and also productivity/profit. In hindsight, great innovations are all surprisingly obvious, making them irresistible for the user/consumer and value-creating for the innovators who have looked to protect their space, not just with traditional IP but creative solutions that “widen their moat”. So great work that makes products that really improve people’s lives are where I really see Innovation juices flowing!

Ian began his career by completing a Toolmaking apprenticeship with a sub-contract toolmaking firm that supplied components to the Automotive, Aerospace, Medical, and Food Packaging industries. He went on to further his studies in Lean Manufacturing and Health and Safety, eventually becoming the company’s Health & Safety and Business Development Manager. His career continued with roles such as Operations Trainer at SAFRAN and managing the training academy within the SONY Group. In 2018, Ian transitioned into an international role with Moore Nanotechnology as their overseas sales representative, having previously been one of their customers. Throughout his diverse career, Ian has remained actively involved in apprentice recruitment and training, demonstrating a long-standing commitment to developing the next generation of skilled professionals. 

What am I looking for in an entry?

As judges, we need to determine the best candidate from what is always a very high standard of entries. That doesn’t mean that we are always looking for the highest qualifications or the candidate that received the most awards and recognition, what we want to understand is the journey that the individual has or is making. What skills and knowledge did you have before starting your apprenticeship and how these have developed. We want to hear about your practical and academic projects and the challenges you have faced, tell us about the things that have challenged you and how you have overcome these and most of all, tell us what’s great about your company and why you love to work there.

Ian brings 43 years of experience in advanced automotive manufacturing, having begun his career as an Engineering Apprentice. He progressed through various production roles and spent 15 years as a Section Manager in Learning and Development at a major automotive OEM. In 2022, he played a key role in supporting the setup and launch of a GIGA factory in Blyth as a Learning Specialist and was appointed Professor of Practice for Electrification Skills at Newcastle University. A passionate advocate for education and skills development, Ian was awarded an MBE in the 2022 New Year Honours for his services to Apprenticeships and STEM education. He was also recognised as both the Regional and National Apprenticeship Ambassador Champion in 2021 and named a Top 20 Exemplar in the Manufacturing Top100 in 2018. Ian is deeply committed to raising aspirations and ensuring that social, economic, or gender barriers do not limit young people’s opportunities in the sector.

What I’m looking for is what makes this entry truly exceptional. What does this individual do that goes above and beyond their usual responsibilities and role? Being nominated already suggests they excel at their job, but I want to know what sets them apart. Do they volunteer in their region, collaborate with young people in the community, support colleagues, or work with other teams? Have they overcome significant obstacles to reach their current position? These are the qualities and actions that make an entry stand out.

Ian is director of the Industrial Division at Amalgamated Metal Corporation (AMC Group), headquartered in London. AMC has diverse operations across the globe in niche’ specialty metals sectors and engaged in ongoing R&D too. In addition AMC is a category 1 member of the London Metal Exchange and some units within the group can trace their history back to the late 1800’s. Ian’s career over the past 25 years has been in Mining, Metals and Energy in both upstream and downstream industries. He is passionate about increasing the UK’s presence globally as an industrial leader and takes delight, in the next generation of apprentices, that will spearhead continued growth and excellence in the global arena.

James re-joined the college in the summer of 2023, bringing with him 16 years of experience in Further Education, including eight years previously spent at the same institution. Jamie is an experienced C-Suite Director and NED, delivering engineering and operational leadership across multiple sectors and industries including manufacturing, marine, aviation, defence and leisure. He also volunteers with a number of engineering and professional membership organisations on wellbeing, safety, equality and allyship. Starting his career in the Royal Navy as an Air Engineer on Sea King Helicopters, he then spent nine years as an operational pilot and test pilot before returning to engineering and senior management roles. Following a successful career in the Military, Jamie joined Chessington World of Adventures as the Technical Director, responsible for the safe engineering and operations of all the rides, attractions and infrastructure within a busy Theme Park. After 3.5 amazing years, he then joined the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) as Director of Engineering and Supply, responsible for the design, manufacture, and safe operation of the fleet of boats, vehicles and infrastructure to deliver 24/7 rescue cover around the UK and Republic of Ireland. During his time at the RNLI, Jamie won the MakeUK Southern Region "Health, Safety and Wellbeing Award" for the introduction and management of a wellbeing programme for his team of 450 engineers and supply chain professionals. Jamie is now the Chief Operating Officer for the International Marine Contractors Association, a membership trade body representing over 800 marine industries across 65 countries. He is also the Director of iunctura, a company focused on driving change and improvements in safety, mental health and wellbeing, allyship and inclusion. He is a regular speaker, facilitator and panelist leading conversations about joining physical health and safety with mental health and safety, and is proud to be a judge for this prestigious MakeUK award.

What am I looking for in an entry?

It's great to be able to enter and win any award with Make UK and to be successful you need safe, happy and engaged staff driving your innovation, enterprise, apprentice schemes and sustainability. That's why I believe the Health, Safety and Wellbeing category is one of the most important categories to enter. Modern Health and Safety needs to go beyond just the traditional and successful physical systems we're all used to in manufacturing. For me, a successful entry would include a wide range of health and safety skills and champion elements of wellbeing, psychological safety, and/or mental health and safety. To stand out, it would be great to see companies showcasing various programmes, systems or teams putting the wellbeing of their employees first.

Jill MacBryde is Associate Principal, Entrepreneurship and Enterprise at Strathclyde University. She is also Professor of Innovation and Operations Management within Strathclyde Business School. Jill is Co-Director of the ESRC Made Smarter “InterAct” network, which aims to bring insights from the social sciences to support the innovation and diffusion of digital technologies that will result in a stronger, more resilient, manufacturing base. Within InterAct she also leads the core research stream around “The Future of Manufacturing Work”. Jill was previously Director of the Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship. Jill has been active in building diversity in UK manufacturing. She has been involved in the Women in Manufacturing initiative from the outset, speaking at the first event in 2023. Jill was part of a Scottish Government short working group looking at Equality, Diversity and Wellbeing in Manufacturing Equalities and wellbeing in manufacturing: recommendations report - gov.scot (www.gov.scot).

What am I looking for in an entry?

I am judging the manufacturing impact award. I am looking for evidence of an organisation who is making a positive impact on society through either its products and services or through actions taken. For it could be that your products are making people’s lives better, easier, or helping the environment. Or it could be those extra things that you do – for example engaging with the wider community, fundraising, or impact on the families of employees. It is particularly good when we hear it from the people who you are impacting.

Kerry Kirwan is a Deputy Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research) for the University of Warwick, a Trustee of The Alan Turing Institute and a Professor at WMG. He is the Director of the £11m EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Sustainable Materials and Manufacturing (EngD), Strategic Director of the £10m Industrial Doctorate Centre and Head of the Sustainable Materials and Manufacturing Research Group within WMG. Previously he was a member of the EPSRC's Manufacturing the Future Strategic Advisory Team. Prof Kirwan is a specialist in circular economy, sustainable materials, polymer processing and indsutrial applications, having graduated from Warwick's Engineering Doctorate (EngD) programme in 2003. He has extensive experience of developing environmentally friendly materials for application within numerous industries and secured in excess of £45m of research funding from both public and private bodies.

Liz has spent the last eight years working with small and medium sized manufacturers helping them improve their competitiveness. Originally a manufacturing engineering, she specialised in process improvement and innovation, applying Lean Six Sigma approaches. After spending time working in manufacturing for a multinational company, she moved companies and took up a role training and supporting across a range of industries, helping to develop talent and skills related to process improvement. She has mentored and trained dozens of Lean Six Sigma Green and Black Belts, as well as running a European Master Black Belt programme. Key to any company improvement or innovation is people, and latterly she has focused on developing others in terms of their leadership skills. Gaining a MSc in Psychology with a Business Specialism, she has driven the development of a Future Sustainable Manufacturing Leaders course, in conjunction with industrial partners, which has received very positive feedback.

What am I looking for in an entry?

My primary interest is in how the company has recognised and articulated the need to develop talent, whether internally to the business, or more longer term across manufacturing through community and school engagement. I am keen to learn about how they have created an inclusive approach throughout their chosen activities from engaging with stakeholders through selecting individuals to support. Another key aspect is how awareness/training/development is tailored to the needs of the individuals and their specific circumstance rather than maintaining a generic approach.

Lorna McIntyre is the Head of Interventions Design Team for Strategic Development at the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the national regulator for workplace health and safety in Great Britain. In this role, Lorna is responsible for leading HSE’s response to delivering the strategic objective for reducing work-related ill health ensuring that HSE continues to protect people and places by managing risks in the workplace. She joined HSE in 2017 as a HM Inspector for Health and Safety and has undertaken inspections and investigations across a range of industries, before taking up her current post to lead the reducing work-related ill health agenda and enhance regulatory impact. With a background in public health research and health promotion in workplaces for the NHS Lorna brings a wealth of experience to her current position. Lorna is committed to evidence-based decision making, partnership working, and continuous improvement in the delivery of public service.

Louis is currently the Global Product Manager for the Machine Knife division at leading aftermarket machine parts company, PartsPak. He began his career in manufacturing eight years ago in Sheffield and completed a management degree apprenticeship at Sheffield Hallam University. In 2023, he was named Business Final Year Apprentice of the Year at his previous company—an accolade that provided a strong platform for his progression into the global leadership role he holds today. Now in his second year as a Make UK Awards judge, Louis looks forward to the event each year. Stuart grew up in rural Cornwall where career options were limited. He entered Devonport Royal Dockyard in Plymouth as a signwriter alongside assisting in building lifeboats for the RNLI. His interest in mechanical engineering soon took hold and he commenced his engineering career ‘on his tools’ working for Defence contractors in craft roles. In the following 19 years he progressed through two Advanced Apprenticeships schemes leading to an MSc in Nuclear Science and has developed a professional career path within the Ministry of Defence. Stuarts primary specialism is now Nuclear Engineering but having held posts as a Surveyor, Design Authority and Quality Assurance Officer, he has a range of experience across the engineering spectrum. He now holds the post of Chief Engineer. A former Make UK regional winner and national rising star, 2025 marks his 10th year as a judge—an opportunity he values for inspiring the next generation.

Having judged the awards for the past 9 years I am seeking a unique application that stands out from the crowd.
